Content creator Amir Shokeen has faced renewed criticism after his apology over a viral video allegedly showing him making racist remarks towards a youth from Tripura drew further controversy for referring to the northeastern state as “Tripuram”.

In his apology, Shokeen reportedly claimed that the original video was intended as a joke and that he had no intention of hurting anyone. He also appealed for forgiveness, saying he had young children and was unaware of the state of Tripura.

However, his reference to the state as “Tripuram” triggered fresh criticism, with the apology adding to the controversy surrounding the viral video.

The incident reportedly occurred during an interaction in Delhi, where Shokeen allegedly made racial remarks and offensive gestures towards a young man from Tripura. The video has prompted calls for legal action against the content creator.

Tripura Police Assure Strict Action
Tripura Police have indicated that strict action will be taken in the matter, according to Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper. A case is expected to be registered shortly, and the state police are coordinating with Delhi Police, he said.

The controversy has also prompted complaints from several organisations seeking action against Shokeen.

The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) and the TIPRA Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) have filed separate complaints at the New Capital Complex police station in Agartala. The Delhi Tripura Students Forum has also submitted a complaint seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

The organisations have alleged that the video contains racial harassment and derogatory remarks targeting the youth and the identity of people from Tripura.

They have urged authorities to investigate the incident and initiate legal proceedings under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, wherever applicable.

The matter is now drawing attention to concerns over racial discrimination against people from Northeast India and the accountability of social media content creators. Further action will depend on the police investigation and the findings of the authorities.
