The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, has announced a 48-hour total shutdown across Manipur’s Kangpokpi district following the alleged abduction of two Kuki youths, raising fresh concerns about security and community tensions in the region.
The shutdown began at 5 pm on October 29 and is scheduled to continue until 5 pm on October 31. The organisation has demanded the immediate, safe and unconditional release of the two missing youths.
The individuals have been identified as Tinginlun Chongloi and Paoginlal Hangsing, both residents of Taphou Kuki village in Kangpokpi district.
CoTU has urged the state government and security agencies to take immediate action to locate the youths and ensure their safe return to their families.
In its statement, the organisation accused the authorities of adopting a discriminatory approach towards security incidents involving members of the Kuki-Zo community.
CoTU alleged that cases involving other communities frequently receive swift rescue operations and security responses, while incidents affecting Kuki-Zo residents face delays or insufficient attention.
However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and an official response from the state government or security authorities was not included in the available report.
The organisation warned that it could intensify its agitation if the missing youths were not released safely and without harm.
The shutdown comes amid continuing security challenges and inter-community tensions in Manipur, where authorities have been working to restore stability and prevent further violence.
Local residents and community organisations have expressed concern about the safety of civilians and the need for effective intervention.
The situation highlights the importance of impartial law enforcement, timely investigations and coordinated efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
Ensuring the safe recovery of the missing youths and maintaining dialogue between community representatives and authorities remain essential for preventing further unrest in Kangpokpi district.
