New Delhi: India has announced an ambitious plan to introduce 75,000 additional undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats across the country by 2029, marking a significant step towards strengthening medical education and expanding the healthcare workforce. Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted the initiative as part of the government's efforts to improve access to quality medical education and healthcare services.
The proposed expansion is expected to create greater opportunities for aspiring medical professionals while addressing the growing demand for qualified doctors and healthcare specialists across India. The initiative also reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the country's healthcare infrastructure and improving medical services, particularly in underserved and rural regions.
According to the announcement, India currently has 23 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and 863 medical colleges operating nationwide. These institutions play a crucial role in providing medical education, conducting research and delivering essential healthcare services to millions of people.
The addition of 75,000 medical seats is expected to enhance the country's capacity to train healthcare professionals, support specialised medical education and contribute to the long-term development of India's healthcare sector.
The expansion could also help reduce competition for limited medical seats, allowing more students to pursue careers in medicine within the country. Increased training capacity may further strengthen healthcare delivery by improving the availability of medical professionals across different regions.
However, the implementation process, including the distribution of additional seats among states, institutions and medical specialisations, will require detailed planning and coordination.
Further announcements regarding infrastructure development, institutional expansion and seat allocation are expected as the 2029 deadline approaches.
The initiative represents an important step towards building a stronger, more accessible and future-ready healthcare system while creating new educational opportunities for India's aspiring medical professionals.
