Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma formally recognized the merger of eight United Democratic Party legislators with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The official notification was released in a bulletin issued by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat on October 16 under Paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
This major political development significantly alters the political arithmetic within the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The integration reduces the United Democratic Party's assembly strength down to just four members, while simultaneously boosting the Bharatiya Janata Party's tally from two up to ten members.
The eight specific politicians recognized in this party merger are Lahkmen Rymbui, Pius Marwein, Kyrmen Shylla, Mayralborn Syiem, Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah, Ollan Singh Suin, Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah.
Following the announcement, Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesperson Sambit Patra shared his reaction by publicly congratulating the state party unit on its growing legislative numbers. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Patra emphasized that the National Democratic Alliance will continue working to advance various development initiatives and projects across Meghalaya under the active guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
