Vietnam is set to host the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad for the first time, with national preliminary rounds beginning on October 18th across various locations. This marks the first time the competition will be held in Southeast Asia, with the main international event scheduled to take place in Da Nang from February 25th to March 2nd, 2027.
The selection process is organized by the Research Institute for Innovation and Quality Assurance along with its partners, following a launch on July 17th. Junior and senior high school students nationwide can participate in the competition, which aims to identify, nurture, and select students with capabilities and aptitude in mathematics, computer science, programming, and artificial intelligence. Following the preliminary round, the national final round is expected to be held in Hanoi on January 10th, 2027, to select outstanding candidates to join the Vietnamese team for IAIO 2027.
In addition to exam results, the competition provides students with an opportunity to gain early exposure to computational thinking, problem-solving methods, and fundamental artificial intelligence knowledge. At the previous 2026 IAIO competition held in Slovenia, the Vietnamese student delegation won two Silver medals and one Bronze medal.
The upcoming international event is expected to attract around 300 delegates from over 40 countries and territories, including students and the international artificial intelligence community. Holding the event in Vietnam opens up opportunities for professional exchange and networking among educators, experts, and organizations, while connecting young domestic talent with an international academic network and preparing human resources for the digital economy.
