Tripura Government Departments Face Scrutiny Over RTI Compliance and Outdated Websites

Agartala, Tripura: Several government departments in Tripura have come under scrutiny over alleged failures to comply with the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, raising concerns about transparency, accountability and public access to official information.

The concerns primarily relate to Section 4(1)(b) of the RTI Act, which requires public authorities to proactively disclose essential information about their organisational structure, functions, responsibilities, decision-making procedures, budgets and public services.

Questions have also emerged over outdated departmental websites, where important information is reportedly missing, incomplete or not regularly updated. Such shortcomings can make it difficult for citizens to access government records, understand administrative decisions and monitor the implementation of public welfare programmes.

Transparency advocates argue that proactive disclosure is a fundamental responsibility of government departments and should not depend entirely on citizens filing individual RTI applications. Regular publication of accurate information can reduce administrative delays, strengthen public confidence and encourage greater accountability.

The issue is particularly significant for residents of remote and rural areas of Tripura, where digital platforms can provide an important means of accessing government information without travelling to administrative offices.

Observers have emphasised the need for periodic website audits, timely publication of departmental reports and improved digital infrastructure to ensure compliance with transparency requirements.

They have also called for greater awareness among government officials regarding their responsibilities under the RTI Act and the importance of maintaining accessible public information systems.

The concerns highlight broader challenges in digital governance and the need for stronger institutional mechanisms to ensure that transparency commitments are implemented effectively.

Improving RTI compliance and updating official websites could help the Tripura government strengthen citizen engagement, improve service delivery and reinforce public trust in democratic administration.
