Thirty-six suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained by police at a ferry ghat in Assam's Dhubri district after reportedly entering the country illegally. The operation took place following specific intelligence inputs, leading authorities to intercept the group at Jogamaya Ferry Ghat around 10.30 am after they arrived by boat. According to police, the individuals are residents of the Chapainawabganj district in Bangladesh's Rajshahi Division.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the group crossed the India-Bangladesh international border in Meghalaya approximately three days prior to their detention. They subsequently traveled through the South Salmara-Mankachar district, boarding a vessel from Hatsingimari toward Dhubri. An investigating officer noted that around 120 people were on the boat, and screening procedures identified 36 individuals from Bangladesh. Authorities also recovered some documents and mobile phones during the operation.

Dhubri Senior Superintendent of Police Debashish Bora stated that the motive behind the entry remains unclear and that the suspects are undergoing questioning to determine how they entered India and where they intended to go. Law enforcement officials confirmed that appropriate action will be taken under existing laws, and the border department will coordinate their deportation after consulting relevant authorities. Under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, District Commissioners are empowered to issue expulsion orders against individuals determined to be foreigners.
