Churachandpur, October 28: A suspected cadre of the Kuki National Front (MC) was arrested with foreign-made weapons, ammunition and suspected brown sugar during a joint security operation in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, police said.
The intelligence-based operation was launched on the night of October 26, 2026, by a joint team comprising Churachandpur district police, the 129th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the 5 Assam Rifles at Kingkin village near M. Songgel.
During the operation, the security personnel intercepted a suspicious white Bolero vehicle and conducted a search, leading to the arrest of Letkhothang Khongsai, 23, a resident of D. Lhangjol village, according to Manipur Police.
Police said the search resulted in the recovery of two transparent plastic packets containing approximately 1.027 kg of brown sugar, a substance commonly used to refer to heroin in the region.
The authorities also reported the seizure of foreign-made AK-series and MA1 rifles, along with 240 rounds of ammunition of various types. The vehicle, arms, ammunition and suspected contraband were seized during the operation.
During preliminary questioning, Khongsai allegedly disclosed that he was a cadre of the Kuki National Front (MC), an armed group that is among the Kuki-Zomi outfits covered by the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government.
The SoO framework was established to facilitate dialogue and address the armed conflict involving Kuki-Zomi groups in the state.
The arrest comes amid continuing security operations in Manipur, where authorities have been conducting intelligence-based actions to detect illegal arms, ammunition and narcotics.
Police have not provided further details regarding the origin of the seized weapons, the intended destination of the drugs or whether additional arrests are expected in connection with the case.
Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the seizure and determine whether other individuals were involved.
