October 29, 2026: American chipmaking giant Nvidia is reportedly negotiating to provide billions of dollars in credit guarantees to British artificial intelligence cloud provider Nscale, supporting financing for a major data centre project in West Virginia intended for AI developer Anthropic.
According to a report by The Information, citing people familiar with the discussions, Nvidia’s proposed financial backing would help Nscale secure debt funding for construction and power infrastructure at the facility.
Nvidia, already an investor in Nscale, is seeking to support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence computing infrastructure as demand for advanced AI services continues growing globally.
The proposed arrangement remains under negotiation, and no final agreement has been signed. Financial terms could change before the companies reach a formal understanding.
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI assistant, reportedly agreed in August to spend approximately $45 billion renting computing capacity from Nscale’s West Virginia data centre campus.
Separately, Nscale is reportedly discussing another agreement to provide Anthropic with approximately 460 megawatts of AI computing capacity, potentially valued at an additional $45 billion.
These developments highlight the enormous financial requirements associated with building advanced AI infrastructure, including high-performance computing systems, electricity supplies and specialized data centre facilities.
However, the growing reliance on debt financing has raised concerns among investors about the financial sustainability of large-scale AI infrastructure expansion.
Other Nvidia-backed companies, including CoreWeave and Firmus, have also faced scrutiny regarding borrowing arrangements and investment risks associated with their expansion plans.
Nvidia, Nscale and Anthropic had not immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment regarding the reported negotiations.
The potential agreement underscores Nvidia’s expanding influence beyond semiconductor manufacturing into financing and supporting the infrastructure required for next-generation artificial intelligence technologies.
If finalized, the arrangement could strengthen Nscale’s financial position while supporting Anthropic’s growing demand for computing resources.
