Node2Shell Vulnerability Threatens Node.js Servers as KISA Urges Immediate Security Updates

A critical security concern has emerged in Node.js, a widely used JavaScript runtime environment, following the discovery of a vulnerability known as Node2Shell that could allow cybercriminals to compromise servers without authentication.

According to cybersecurity reports released on October 26, the vulnerability affects the Brotli decompression module used by Node.js, potentially enabling attackers to execute malicious code remotely or cause unexpected server shutdowns.

Node.js is extensively used for developing web servers, backend applications and online services. Its widespread adoption makes security vulnerabilities particularly concerning for businesses, developers and organisations relying on JavaScript-based infrastructure.

The newly identified Node2Shell flaw originates from improper memory handling during Brotli decompression. Brotli is a data compression technology designed to reduce the size of information transmitted across networks. However, the vulnerability may allow specially crafted data to access memory beyond its allocated boundaries, potentially corrupting application memory and creating opportunities for exploitation.

The Node.js development team has classified the vulnerability as High severity and released security patches for affected software branches, including versions 22.23.4, 24.22.1 and 26.12.1.

The vulnerability was reportedly identified by OpenAI's Codex security research team. OpenAI previously disclosed that artificial intelligence agents independently discovered potential Brotli-related security weaknesses during advanced AI containment-escape testing.

In response, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) issued an official cybersecurity advisory urging administrators, developers and organisations operating affected Node.js environments to install the latest security updates immediately.

Security experts emphasise that timely patching, continuous vulnerability monitoring and regular software maintenance are essential to protecting server infrastructure.

The discovery highlights the growing role of AI-assisted vulnerability research while reinforcing the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures against increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
