Bangladesh interim assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin stated on Wednesday, October 28, that opening batsman Shadman Islam has discovered his batting template after finishing the day on 99 not out against a disciplined West Indies attack, leaving Bangladesh at 213 for 3. The left-handed opener has recorded nine half-centuries and two centuries across 31 Test matches, facing recent scrutiny for his inability to convert fifties into hundreds before umpires called stumps with him one run short of the milestone.
Salahuddin explained to reporters after the day's play that the entire team felt nervous for the batter, noting that his century count should be higher after playing around 30 Tests. He expressed hope that this innings will help Shadman understand the requirements of scoring a hundred and assist him in his career. Salahuddin praised the opener for assessing the wicket well, avoiding risky shots during tough periods, and keeping the innings under his control.
The interim coach credited Mohammad Ashraful for Shadman's transformation. Salahuddin explained that he is temporarily filling the role in the national dressing room as a guest after being asked to replace Ashraful as the batting coach for the two-match Test series against West Indies. Because little time was available to change techniques, Salahuddin emphasized that the full credit belongs to Ashraful, who spent the past year working closely with the batsmen and shaping their mentality.
