Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians following the conclusion of his second stint, which lasted for three seasons and ended after an underwhelming 2026 campaign. The franchise announced the departure on Saturday, October 17, 2026, marking the end of a decade-long association with the five-time Indian Premier League champion.

Jayawardene first took charge as head coach in 2017, successfully leading the team to IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. After stepping away from the coaching role in 2022 to serve as the franchise’s Global Head of Performance—during which he oversaw overseas expansion and title wins for Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York, and MI Emirates—he returned as head coach in 2024. However, recent returns have been inconsistent, with disappointing campaigns in two of the last three seasons prompting the franchise to seek a fresh outlook.

Franchise owner Nita Ambani praised Jayawardene's calm leadership, integrity, and significant contribution, stating that he will always remain a part of the family. Jayawardene expressed pride in their shared achievements and thanked the Ambanis for their support. Following his departure, the Mumbai Indians have already begun exploring potential replacements, with reports indicating they are in contact with at least three prospective candidates, including an IPL stalwart and two former international captains.
