Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians following the conclusion of his second stint with the franchise. The announcement was made on Saturday, marking the end of an association that dates back to 2017 when he first took charge and subsequently led the team to Indian Premier League titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. His departure follows the 2026 season where the five-time IPL champions finished in ninth place, with the exit having been widely anticipated due to inconsistent recent returns and struggles to remain competitive.
During his long-standing involvement with the franchise, Jayawardene previously stepped away from the head coach role in 2022 to serve as the Global Head of Performance before returning to coach for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. In his broader role overseeing the franchise's expansion into overseas leagues, he helped establish a common cricketing philosophy, during which time the Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York, and MI Emirates all secured titles. Franchise owner Nita Ambani praised his calm leadership, integrity, and significant contributions, while Jayawardene expressed immense pride in their shared achievements and thanked the Ambanis for their support.
Following his departure, the franchise has already started exploring potential replacements and is reportedly in contact with at least three candidates, including an IPL stalwart and two former international captains. The recent disappointing campaigns in two of the last three seasons prompted questions over the team's approach, leading to the need for a reset as the organization embarks on a new chapter.
