Historic Gold: Manisha Bhanwala Becomes India's First Woman World Wrestling Champion

Astana, Kazakhstan: In a historic achievement for Indian sports, Manisha Bhanwala has become India's first-ever woman to win a gold medal at the Senior World Wrestling Championships. The 29-year-old wrestler scripted history on October 30, 2026, by defeating American wrestler Abigail Nette 8-6 in the women's 59kg freestyle final in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The championship bout witnessed an extraordinary comeback as Manisha initially trailed 0-6 against her American opponent. Displaying remarkable determination, technical excellence and mental strength, she fought back to secure eight points and claim the historic gold medal.

With this victory, Manisha became only the second Indian wrestler to win a senior World Championships gold medal, following Sushil Kumar, who secured the men's 66kg freestyle title in 2010. Her triumph ended India's 16-year wait for another world wrestling champion.

Manisha's victory also marked a significant milestone for Indian women's wrestling, which has witnessed increasing success in international competitions.

India delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 championships, securing four medals in women's freestyle wrestling. Neelam Sirohi earned silver in the 50kg category, while Kajal Dhochak claimed silver in the 76kg division. Tanmu Sharma contributed a bronze medal.

Competing in her fourth senior World Championships, Manisha achieved her first podium finish in spectacular fashion. Having already secured the Asian championship title in 2025, she demonstrated her growing dominance on the international wrestling stage.

Her achievement represents a proud moment for Indian sports and highlights the potential of women athletes to excel at the highest international level.

Manisha's historic victory is expected to inspire young wrestlers, particularly girls across India, to pursue their sporting ambitions with confidence, discipline and determination.

Her journey delivers a powerful message: perseverance, courage and unwavering commitment can turn extraordinary dreams into historic achievements.
