Five former cricketers were interviewed in Mumbai on Thursday, October 15, 2026, by the Cricket Advisory Committee for a vacant position on the senior men's selection committee. The Board of Control for Cricket in India sought to fill the spot left by Ajit Agarkar, who chose not to seek a contract renewal after his term expired on October 4.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, consisting of Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, conducted the interviews with a group of candidates that included the Mumbai trio of Wasim Jaffer, Ramesh Powar, and Salil Ankola, alongside Jacob Martin and Connor Williams from Baroda. Except for Williams, whose purported Test appearance in South Africa was part of an abandoned match, the remaining four candidates have represented India in Test matches. Ankola previously served on Agarkar's panel, which selected India's victorious squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, and is aiming for a return to the five-member panel following a two-year hiatus.

Jaffer holds the distinction of being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy history and has the most Test appearances among the group with 31 caps. Under BCCI rules, the panel member with the most Test appearances automatically becomes the chairman of the selection committee. Meanwhile, Powar is reportedly the front-runner for the position. The former off-spinner has coached Gujarat domestically for three seasons and was initially approached for a junior committee vacancy before being directed toward the senior role.
