New Delhi: Delhi Police has filed a 500-page chargesheet against seven accused in connection with the alleged murder of 54-year-old Manipuri musician and teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died after being assaulted outside his residence in Kilokari village, southeast Delhi, on September 7.
The chargesheet was submitted before a Saket court and reportedly includes statements from 30 witnesses. The accused face charges relating to murder, criminal conspiracy and house-trespass. Seven adults and one juvenile were arrested in connection with the case.
According to the investigation, Singh was allegedly attacked by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff after he objected to people shouting and drinking outside his apartment. The group allegedly followed him upstairs and assaulted him outside his home in front of his son before fleeing.
Singh’s son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A police source said the accused allegedly told investigators that they assaulted Singh with fists and blows to teach him a lesson for objecting to the noise. They reportedly claimed they had not expected the assault to result in his death.
Singh had lived in Kilokari village for more than two decades. Reports indicate that he had previously complained to the owner of a nearby dhaba about noise caused by people gathering outside the establishment.
The filing of the chargesheet marks a significant step in the legal proceedings. The case has drawn attention to concerns about public safety, violence arising from neighbourhood disputes and the protection of residents who raise complaints about disturbances.
The accused will face further legal proceedings as the court considers the charges and evidence presented by the police.
