China’s Xinyu Lin secured a major upset victory at the World Triathlon Cup in Beijing, defeating pre-race favorites such as Kate Waugh, Marta Kropko, and Nina Eim to take the top step of the podium.
The decisive turning point in the competition occurred during the early stages of the bike leg. A small breakaway group managed to establish a lead of more than a minute as they headed into the second transition. When entering the running segment, Lin positioned herself at the front alongside Brea Roderick, Manami Hayashi, Mathilde Gautier, and the favorites Kropko and Waugh, while Eim had already missed the key move and fell out of podium contention.
As the 10k run progressed, Waugh could not keep up with the fast pace set by Kropko and Lin. The leading duo broke away together and built a lead of approximately thirty seconds over Waugh, with the rest of the chasing field trailing by over a minute.
In the final stretch, Lin launched a decisive late surge that dropped Kropko, allowing her to claim the home victory with a final time of 2:00:33. Kropko crossed the finish line five seconds later to secure second place in 2:00:38, and Waugh completed the podium by taking third place with a time of 2:01:28.
