Beijing: Grassroots football leagues are rapidly gaining popularity across China, attracting thousands of enthusiastic spectators and emerging as an unexpected source of community pride, entertainment and economic activity amid the country's sluggish economic conditions.
The movement began in Jiangsu province in spring 2025, when amateur city-versus-city football competitions captured public attention. Since then, similar tournaments have reportedly expanded to around 20 other provinces, demonstrating growing enthusiasm for locally organised sporting events.
In Hunan province, the Xiangchao football league has become a major attraction. During a recent match between Yiyang and Changsha, approximately 26,000 spectators filled the stadium, passionately supporting their respective teams.
The event featured a dramatic appearance by a performer dressed as Guan Yu, a legendary Chinese military figure, who rode a black horse around the stadium. Despite Yiyang's 1-0 defeat against Changsha, the emotional reactions of players and supporters highlighted the competition's significance.
Unlike professional football tournaments, these amateur leagues feature inconsistent performances, missed opportunities and occasional organisational delays. Nevertheless, their popularity reflects strong local identities and genuine enthusiasm among supporters.
Beyond sporting entertainment, the competitions are generating economic opportunities for local businesses. Food vendors, small traders and regional product sellers benefit from increased visitor activity around stadiums.
Local authorities increasingly view these tournaments as instruments for stimulating domestic consumption, encouraging tourism and strengthening regional economic engagement.
The leagues have also provided a psychological boost to communities facing economic uncertainty. Supporters describe the competitions as opportunities for collective celebration and renewed civic pride.
China's expanding grassroots football movement illustrates how community sports can strengthen social connections while supporting local economies.
However, questions remain about whether government-backed enthusiasm can translate into sustainable sporting development and lasting economic benefits.
