Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday that the Tinsukia region is now progressing toward development after previously experiencing militant activities. The announcement came as he began a two-day visit to the Tinsukia district to review infrastructure projects, launch urban initiatives, and interact with local residents.

Tinsukia district, situated in upper Assam approximately 500 kilometres east of Guwahati, was previously a hotbed for state insurgency. The militant group ULFA-I utilized the area for operations, with many local youths serving as cadres. During his current visit, CM Sarma aims to inaugurate and initiate projects designed to enhance civic amenities, improve connectivity, and create employment in Assam's easternmost district.

Throughout his two-day itinerary, CM Sarma will launch municipal initiatives such as a playground, public parks, water body rejuvenation, and a civic service mobile application. He also noted Tinsukia's positive performance in Swachh Survekshan cleanliness surveys. On Thursday, he plans to review an ongoing 1,000-seat auditorium project, an inter-state bus terminus, and the proposed site for a new medical college intended to serve Tinsukia and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

Additional engagements include inaugurating an autoclaved aerated concrete block manufacturing plant to boost local economic activity and employment, as well as attending the Moran Sports Carnival. The chief minister will engage directly with residents to assess government scheme implementation and listen to their concerns, marking a significant transition from past violence to a centre of trade and social cohesion.
