Washington decided to pull back on aggressive tariff threats, handing India crucial macroeconomic breathing room. Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge, stated on Saturday that the tariff waiver provides comforting relief, though India must remain cautious amid ongoing uncertainties in global trade dynamics. The developments follow US President Donald Trump waiving sanctions provisions under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which could have imposed tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods imported from major buyers of Russian crude like India and China. Trump invoked Section 115 of the Act due to US national interests and a diesel supply deal with Russia, following concerns conveyed by India's Ministry of External Affairs.
Sinha noted that markets viewed the US threat of up to 100 per cent tariffs primarily as a negotiating technique rather than an immediate structural threat. She cautioned that the reprieve might be temporary, highlighting the need for a comprehensive bilateral trade deal. The waiver benefits the United States for energy security and wider diesel crack spreads, while India's refined petroleum products help the US curb domestic inflation. Although Russia supplies over 30 per cent of India's crude imports, the historical discounting advantage has significantly narrowed, with Russian crude trading around $117 per barrel compared to Brent spot prices near $120. Imports now primarily secure steady energy availability.
Despite high crude prices, India's macroeconomic buffers remain resilient. Sinha projected the current account deficit to stay between 0.8 per cent and 1.2 per cent of GDP, supported by robust export growth, while headline inflation is expected to average around 5 per cent. Healthy tax collections cushion the fiscal deficit, and Sinha backed the IDBI Bank stake sale as a positive step toward meeting budgetary targets without concerning the banking sector.
