A bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced legislation on Friday to block President Donald Trump's arrangement for purchasing and importing Russian diesel. The proposed measure, called the Prohibit Corrupt Russia Oil Deals Act, was put forward by Congressman Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Lawmakers introduced the bill to escalate congressional opposition to a policy critics warn could supply Moscow with extra revenue for its ongoing war in Ukraine.
The legislation would ban certain American government investments in Russian energy and invalidate Treasury Department licences that currently permit Russian fuel transactions. Furthermore, the measure aims to prevent any future authorisations of a similar kind and requires the administration to apply sanctions targeting Russian energy. Meeks argued that permitting these diesel purchases contradicts wider US efforts to apply economic pressure on Moscow, stating the arrangement would provide additional financial resources to President Vladimir Putin's government while failing to lower costs for the American people.
The legislative proposal has gained support from members of both political parties, featuring co-sponsors such as Republican Congressman Don Bacon and Democratic Representatives Ami Bera, Jim Costa, Steny Hoyer, and Bill Keating. This action follows mounting criticism of the administration's authorisation of Russian-origin diesel transactions and questions over whether such imports undermine existing sanctions intended to reduce Russian revenues.
Before these restrictions can become law, the proposed measure requires full congressional approval and completion of the legislative process.
