The historic city of Luang Prabang in northern Laos witnessed a record turnout of 3,121 runners from more than 50 countries and regions during the Run for Children Luang Prabang Half Marathon 2026, highlighting international solidarity and support for children's healthcare.
Organised in collaboration with China Daily and the RVi Group, the charity event marked its largest edition in 12 years, combining athletic participation, cultural exploration and humanitarian assistance.
The marathon began near the Royal Palace Museum, taking participants through Luang Prabang's picturesque streets, ancient Buddhist temples and scenic riverside routes. Runners passed prominent landmarks, including Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Manorom, while enjoying views of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.
Participants competed across three distances, with 304 runners completing the 21-kilometre half marathon, 647 joining the 14-kilometre race and more than 2,100 participating in the seven-kilometre fun run.
Proceeds from the event will support Lao Friends Hospital for Children, established in 2015, which provides free medical treatment to children across northern Laos. The initiative aims to improve access to essential pediatric healthcare for vulnerable families.
Chinese Consul General Zhang Sheping, who participated in the event, praised the enthusiasm and unity demonstrated by runners from diverse backgrounds. He emphasised that the marathon represented more than sporting achievement, reflecting friendship, peace and collective responsibility toward children.
The event also carried diplomatic significance, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Laos.
Luang Prabang provincial official Bounleua Sinxayvoravong welcomed the impressive international participation, highlighting the city's growing appeal as a destination for sporting and charitable events.
The record-breaking marathon demonstrated how sports, cultural heritage and international cooperation can unite communities while generating meaningful support for children's health and well-being in Laos.
