New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips is set to play a crucial role in the fifth and final T20I against India on Sunday, November 1, at Seddon Park in Hamilton. He enters the match with an opportunity to break the all-time record for the most runs scored in a bilateral T20I series.
Phillips has accumulated 276 runs during the ongoing series, which includes a 107-run innings from 49 balls in the fourth T20I on Friday, October 30. To surpass the current record, he needs 56 more runs in the upcoming fixture. The record is held by England player Phil Salt, who made 331 runs across five T20Is against the West Indies in December 2023. Pakistan representative Mohammad Rizwan sits second with 316 runs from six T20Is against England in 2022. Only two players have ever reached 300 or more runs in such a series, a milestone Phillips can now join.
In addition to the global record, Phillips requires only 15 runs to eclipse Mark Chapman's record for the most runs by a New Zealand player in a bilateral T20I series, set when Chapman scored 290 runs in five games against Pakistan in 2024. Phillips already holds the record for the most runs in a T20I series against India. Furthermore, if he achieves a half-century in the final game, he will become only the third player to record four or more 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series, joining Pakistan's Rizwan and Japan's Sabaorish Ravichandran.
