Mercedes-Benz Lowers 2026 Profit Outlook Due to China Market Pressures

Source - Reuters

Mercedes-Benz reduced its 2026 profit margin outlook on Tuesday as a result of weaker market conditions in China and higher fourth-quarter costs. The German premium automaker now anticipates an adjusted return on sales between 2% and 3% for 2026, which is lower than its prior guidance of 3% to 5%. In addition, the company lowered its 2026 group operating profit guidance, stating that it now expects earnings to remain broadly flat year-on-year rather than significantly higher following the announcement.

This negative outlook highlights the growing challenges faced by German carmakers in China, which functions as the largest auto market in the world. Operations in the region are currently suffering from slowing demand alongside intense competition from local manufacturers. These market dynamics are steadily eroding both sales volumes and pricing power for foreign brands. Consequently, core car sales for Mercedes dropped by 8% year-on-year during the third quarter, largely driven by weak consumer demand within China.

The warning from Mercedes follows similar moves by rival manufacturers BMW and Volkswagen, both of which also reduced their respective financial outlooks earlier this year while pointing to the worsening conditions in China. Metzler analyst Daniel Schwarz identified China as the primary driver behind the underperformance of German carmakers. Following the latest announcement, shares in Mercedes experienced a decline of up to 5.5% and remained down by approximately 4% around 9:55 am GMT as the company and competitors like BMW continue to maintain a heavy exposure to the Chinese market.
