The Chinese Embassy in Manila has challenged Philippine lawmakers to proceed with expelling the Chinese envoy, dismissing recent threats as mere bluffing. This diplomatic friction follows statements made by Senator Risa Hontiveros, who argued that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. summoning the Chinese ambassador was insufficient after the envoy's remarks regarding the potential use of force.
The controversy began when Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan claimed that China could easily prevail against the Philippines if it decided to use military force in the West Philippine Sea. In response to this statement, Senator Hontiveros called for stronger action from the administration, suggesting that the ambassador should be declared persona non grata rather than merely being summoned for a discussion.
Following these remarks, several senators and House representatives discussed the possibility of declaring the envoy persona non grata. Late on Friday evening, the Chinese Embassy addressed the matter through a social media post, questioning whether the legislative threats constituted coercion and explicitly daring the Philippine government to carry out the expulsion.
The ongoing dispute highlights heightened tensions between the two nations regarding territorial claims and security in the region. As lawmakers debate appropriate diplomatic responses, the Chinese Embassy has made it clear that officials should either follow through with their threats or cease making them.
