Five people were killed in a late-night shooting incident near Hotel Bilas Inn located in the Ulubari area of Guwahati, Assam. Following the violent clash, Assam Congress President and MP Gaurav Gogoi strongly criticized the ruling BJP, stating that a growing spirit of lawlessness and escalating violence are spreading across the North East under the party's governance.

Gogoi held the political atmosphere and leadership appointments made by the ruling dispensation responsible for the deterioration of public safety. He argued that the BJP has placed questionable individuals into key positions of authority, including ministerial and chief ministerial roles, without doing proper background homework. According to the Congress leader, this approach fosters instability and allows illegal syndicates to operate, directly disturbing society in states such as Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta confirmed that the primary suspect, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the fatal shooting was triggered by a bitter property dispute concerning the lease agreement of Hotel Bilas Inn.

In addition to addressing the local security situation, Gogoi criticized the Election Commission of India and the Chief Election Commissioner regarding ongoing opposition demands. He asserted that a neutral and independent electoral body should demonstrate accountability rather than simply defending itself against allegations.
