Russia detains teenager over suspected Moscow park attack plot

Russian authorities detained a teenager suspected of plotting an attack at a popular Moscow park following a security warning from the United States. The Federal Security Service stated that the suspect, a Russian citizen whose identity has not been released, posted images on TikTok wearing a balaclava and tactical gear while holding a replica of an automatic weapon. The suspect also shared photographs taken at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve with the caption stating that a location had been found.

The arrest followed a security alert issued on Saturday by the United States embassy in Moscow, which warned of a credible threat of a mass casualty event at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve palace and park complex. The embassy advised individuals to stay away from the area and noted that Washington was coordinating a response with Russian authorities, leading to the temporary closure of the park on Saturday. Following the tip, searches of the suspect's home by the Federal SecurityService uncovered the tactical clothing and accessories shown in the online photographs. Furthermore, the teenager's mobile phone contained internet searches concerning terrorist attacks and mass killings, alongside a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel.

The Federal Security Service expressed gratitude to the American side for providing the information regarding the threat. Russia's Investigative Committee is currently reviewing potential legal actions against the detained suspect. This incident follows previous warnings issued by the United States to Russia concerning potential attacks, including a March 2024 warning prior to a concert hall attack by an affiliate of the ISIL group that resulted in more than 140 deaths. This cooperation occurred despite ongoing tensions between Moscow and Washington stemming from the war in Ukraine.
