North Korea announced today that it successfully conducted a test on Thursday of a new artificial intelligence-powered torpedo system called "Zam-2.0." State media described the weapon as a "high-speed, precision-guided" system utilizing artificial intelligence technology for target detection and guidance, though specific details regarding the AI system were not provided.
According to the state news agency report, the recent test successfully confirmed the operation of the weapon's propulsion systems. These propulsion systems were developed through more than 180 separate tests conducted over the past five years by North Korean developers.
This weapons test occurs as North Korea continues to increase its military displays in recent weeks, which has included conducting the country's first underwater-launched missile tests in nearly three years. Leader Kim Jong Un has recently focused increased attention on developing the nation's naval capabilities.
Additionally, North Korea recently tested hypersonic missile systems of varying ranges on September 20 and October 3. These efforts are part of a broader initiative by the country to expand its military arsenal with the goal of overcoming existing missile defense systems in both South Korea and Japan.
