North Korea Conducts Test of New AI-Enabled Torpedo System

North Korea successfully tested a new artificial intelligence-equipped torpedo system designed to detect and guide weapons toward targets, according to state media reports on Saturday. The Korean Central News Agency announced that the test of the super-speed, precisely guided weapon, known as Zam-2.0, took place on Thursday, though the report omitted details on how artificial intelligence was integrated into the system.

The recent test also confirmed the functionality of the torpedo's propulsion systems, which were refined through more than 180 tests over the past five years. Meanwhile, South Korea's military did not immediately comment on the announcement, having frequently accused Pyongyang of overstating its military capabilities. The test comes amid a recent escalation in weapons demonstrations by North Korea, including its first underwater-launched missile tests in nearly three years.

Leader Kim Jong Un has shifted significant focus toward enhancing naval capabilities following years of ballistic missile development. Experts noted that missile tests conducted on Wednesday likely involved an uncommissioned submarine built to launch nuclear weapons. Furthermore, North Korea tested hypersonic missile systems on Sept 20 and Oct 3, with Kim Yo Jong claiming the October test also used artificial intelligence technology.

Despite these claims, experts suggest North Korea's weapons are unlikely to feature advanced digital capabilities like autonomous target identification, even as guidance software improves. This weapons expansion occurs as diplomatic ties with South Korea remain halted and nuclear negotiations with Washington are deadlocked.
