The Embassy of India in Jakarta has introduced an artificial intelligence avatar named Dewi to serve as its new digital representative, making her debut during the festive occasions of Navaratri and Durga Puja. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty announced the arrival of the virtual guide on social media on Tuesday, stating that she is ready to guide her followers on this auspicious occasion.

The name Dewi was chosen to give the avatar a local identity, as it means goddess in Indonesian, while also adding a festive touch to her launch. Despite her divine name and cultural debut, Dewi's modern responsibilities include helping people access information regarding culture, travel, scholarships, business and investment opportunities, and consular updates. The mission stated that the initiative aims to bring stories and updates from the India-Indonesia partnership closer to audiences.

The project is designed for both Indians living in Indonesia and Indonesians who are interested in exploring India. According to the Indian mission, Indonesia is home to about 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin and approximately 15,000 Non-Resident Indians, the majority of whom work as professionals such as engineers, teachers, and chartered accountants, with several community associations active in major cities like Jakarta.
