China's reported construction of a 3-kilometre runway on Antelope Reef in the disputed Paracel Islands has raised fresh concerns over Beijing's expanding military capabilities and strategic influence in the South China Sea.

The development, if confirmed, would represent a significant expansion of infrastructure in the strategically important island group, where competing territorial claims have long contributed to regional tensions.

A runway of this length could potentially accommodate various military aircraft, including transport planes, surveillance platforms and fighter jets, depending on its construction standards and supporting facilities. Such infrastructure could strengthen China's ability to conduct aerial patrols, improve logistical operations and maintain a more sustained presence across contested maritime areas.

Antelope Reef is located within the Paracel Islands, which are controlled by China but also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. The surrounding waters are strategically important for international shipping, maritime resources and regional security.

Defence analysts have warned that additional aviation infrastructure could extend China's operational reach and reinforce its existing military installations across the South China Sea.

China has previously developed runways, radar systems, port facilities and other infrastructure on disputed maritime features, prompting concerns among neighbouring countries and international security observers.

Beijing maintains that its activities in the South China Sea support national sovereignty, maritime security and legitimate development requirements. However, critics argue that expanding military-capable infrastructure could alter the regional balance of power and complicate efforts to resolve territorial disputes peacefully.

The reported Antelope Reef project also highlights growing concerns over freedom of navigation and the security implications of increasing militarisation in disputed waters.

While independent verification of the runway's reported dimensions, construction status and intended use remains necessary, the development underscores the strategic importance of the Paracel Islands in China's broader maritime ambitions.
